How ice grows from premelting films and water droplets

چکیده

Close to the triple point, surface of ice is covered by a thin liquid layer (so-called quasi-liquid layer) which crucially impacts growth and melting rates. Experimental probes cannot observe processes below this layer, classical models vapor deposition do not account for formation premelting films. Here, we develop mesoscopic model liquid-film mediated growth, identify various resulting regimes. At low saturation, freezing proceeds terrace spreading, but motion buried solid conveyed through outer liquid-vapor interface. higher saturations water droplets condense, large crater forms below, undetectably beneath droplet. Our approach general framework that naturally close three phase coexistence provides first principle theory may prove useful in geosciences.

Premelting, fluctuations, and coarse-graining of water-ice interfaces.

Using statistical field theory supplemented with molecular dynamics simulations, we consider premelting on the surface of ice as a generic consequence of broken hydrogen bonds at the boundary between the condensed and gaseous phases. A procedure for coarse-graining molecular configurations onto a continuous scalar order parameter field is discussed, which provides a convenient representation of...

Formation and stability of cubic ice in water droplets.

There is growing evidence that a metastable phase of ice, cubic ice, plays an important role in the Earth's troposphere and stratosphere. Cubic ice may also be important in diverse fields such as cryobiology and planetary sciences. Using X-ray diffraction, we studied the formation of cubic ice in pure water droplets suspended in an oil matrix as a function of droplet size. The results show that...

Theory of ice premelting in porous media.

Premelting describes the confluence of phenomena that are responsible for the stable existence of the liquid phase of matter in the solid region of its bulk phase diagram. Here we develop a theoretical description of the premelting of water ice contained in a porous matrix, made of a material with a melting temperature substantially larger than ice itself, to predict the amount of liquid water ...

Impurity Effects in the Premelting of Ice

The effect of impurities on the surface and interfacial melting of ice is investigated in the context of the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory by calculating van der Waals and Coulombic interactions within interfacial solution films. At high temperatures, the classical solute effect dominates the melting behavior. However, depending on the amount of impurity, as temperature decreases the ...

Premelting-Induced Smoothening of the Ice-Vapor Interface.

We perform computer simulations of the quasiliquid layer of ice formed at the ice-vapor interface close to the ice Ih-liquid-vapor triple point of water. Our study shows that the two distinct surfaces bounding the film behave at small wavelengths as atomically rough and independent ice-water and water-vapor interfaces. For long wavelengths, however, the two surfaces couple, large scale parallel...
